Unified Action – April 2020
Ask NM State Leaders to Call a Special Session and Authorize Direct Vote-by-Mail for the 2020 General Election
Sponsored by Vicki Simons, Beth Bardwell, Karena Oberman, Stewart Oberman, Rosemarie Sanchez
The Issue
Mail in voting and safe and hygienic in-person voting protocol must be in place in New Mexico for the November 2020 election so that the state of New Mexico makes voting accessible and safe for voters in the face of the unique challenges of the Covid 19 virus or other voting disruptions. Under mail-in voting, a ballot is automatically mailed to every eligible voter and does not require an application like current absentee ballots. If the state is to authorize mail-in voting for use in November 2020, we will need months: to plan and work through the logistics of mail-in voting; to train the election year workforce; and to prepare and provide clear and concise information to the public about how to participate in the 2020 general election by mail. In order to authorize direct vote-by-mail voting, we need a special session of the legislature called asap.
What we are asking
Ask NM State Leaders to Call a Special Session and Authorize Direct Vote-by-Mail for the 2020 General Election
Call or email the Governor’s office, offices of the Speaker of the House and Senate President Pro Tempore.
Say, “I support vote-by-mail. Please encourage the Governor to convene a special session or the legislature to convene an extraordinary session as soon as possible to amend the state’s election laws to authorize direct vote-by-mail for use in the November 2020 election and beyond. Thank you.“
