| The PVA had an excellent meeting on Thursday, May 26 at the Mesilla Community Center.
The meeting opened with reports from the following PVA working groups
A new working group was also proposed, and will be chaired, by Susana Salamanca, called Pro-life/Pro-Choice: Bridging the Gap. In anticipation of the soon-to-be-launched PVA website, descriptions of the activities of each of these groups will be summarized there rather than in this meeting recap. A very moving panel of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and trans-gendered people was led by Ann Gutierrez of the Building Alliances working group. The May Unified Action on Preserving Social Security was presented by Ed Fulmer, a member of Democracy for America and a former long-time employee of the Social Security Administration. There were twelve new signees of the Unified Action agreement, bringing our overall number of participants to over 50. There were a number of announcements and perceptive comments during the final 2 minute Speak Out portion of the meeting. We hope to be able to include all future announcements in the Upcoming Events section of the PVA website. It was announced that Monica Torres will lead a workshop on Framing the Issues at the next PVA meeting, based on George Lakoff’s book don’t think of an elephant. Pages 3-34 and 81-95 of that book were assigned as homework, and copies were made available after the meeting by Cheryll Blevins of the Mesilla Book Center. |
